Ride, Fit & Performance: What Works Well

Pros / strengths:

  1. Smooth, cushioned ride for longer runs & easy days
Multiple reviewers agree the Max 3 shines on longer, steady efforts. The generous cushioning absorbs impact well.
The transition from heel to toe is reportedly smooth thanks to the rocker geometry and plate.

  2. More bounce & liveliness than prior versions
The introduction of DNA Gold (a PEBA-based foam) gives the shoe more “pop” or rebound than the stiffer ride of earlier Max versions.
Some testers say it’s easier to accelerate now than before.

  3. Secure upper / lockdown
The new knit + mesh upper, combined with a gusseted tongue and reinforcements, tends to lock the foot in well, with minimal slippage reported by testers.
After a break-in period, many don’t suffer hot spots.

  4. Decent durability so far
Some testers and owners report good outsole wear even after several dozen miles.
    A Reddit user even noted:

“Very durable, and even feels better after more mileage…”

Bottom Line: Who Is the Max 3 Best For — and Who Not?

Good fit if you:

  • Want a “do-it-all” plated trainer that leans more toward comfort and long-distance cruising than race-day sharpness.

  • Prioritize cushioning, smooth ride, and transition over raw responsiveness.

  • Have neutral to moderate pronation (not heavy overpronation), and don’t require a very wide toe box.

  • Are okay with slightly heavier weight in exchange for plushness and stability in long efforts.

May not suit if you:

  • Do a lot of fast intervals, VO2 workouts, or want a shoe you can race in at very high paces.

  • Have wide feet, especially in the forefoot.

  • Prefer extremely light shoes above all else.

  • Need strong stability features for overpronation or are sensitive to midfoot cutouts.

Get The Right Size!

Improper shoe sizing and shape are the primary cause of ingrown toenails, bunions, corns and hammer toes. Sounds fun, doesn't it? It's not. Shoes that don’t fit your feet correctly can also lead to muscular imbalances in the body, opening the door to foot, knee and hip injuries.

The More You Know..

Most runners get shoes too small for them because they don't take into account these factors:

    • When a load is applied to your foot by running, your foot will spread up to half an inch in length. One shoe size is only 1/3 inch.
    • If allowed, your foot will splay 15 percent in width under load.
    • Your foot is widest at the toes (but most shoes are not).

    Tips on sizing

    • Do not assume you are the same size as a previous shoe.

    • If your feet are slightly different sizes, get your shoes to fit the larger foot.
    • Use this shoe sizing chart:
