The Brooks Glycerin GTS 21 is a stability version of the Glycerin 21, designed to provide the plush cushioning of the Glycerin series with the added support of Brooks' GuideRails® system. This makes it an excellent option for runners who need extra stability but don’t want to sacrifice comfort. Here's a detailed review:

Comfort and Cushioning:

The Glycerin GTS 21 offers exceptional comfort, thanks to the DNA LOFT cushioning that extends throughout the midsole. This cushioning is soft and luxurious, making the shoe ideal for long runs, recovery runs, or any situation where maximum comfort is desired. The cushioning provides a plush underfoot feel without being overly soft, striking a balance between comfort and responsiveness. This makes the shoe versatile enough for a variety of paces and distances.

Stability and Support:

The key feature that differentiates the Glycerin GTS 21 from the standard Glycerin 21 is the inclusion of Brooks’ GuideRails® support system. This system helps to keep the foot aligned by limiting excess movement, particularly for runners who overpronate. Unlike traditional stability shoes that use a medial post, the GuideRails® system is more holistic, offering support when needed without being intrusive. This allows for a smoother and more natural running experience while still providing the necessary support to prevent injury.

Upper Design and Fit:

The upper of the Glycerin GTS 21 is made from engineered mesh, which is both breathable and supportive. The mesh adapts well to the shape of the foot, providing a secure fit without feeling restrictive. The internal bootie construction enhances the overall comfort, offering a seamless fit that reduces the risk of irritation during long runs. The 3D Fit Print technology used in the upper adds structure without adding extra weight, ensuring that the foot is well-supported throughout the run. The fit is generally true to size, with a comfortable amount of room in the toe box for natural foot splay.

Ride and Performance:

The ride of the Glycerin GTS 21 is smooth and stable, combining the plush cushioning of the Glycerin line with the added support of the GuideRails® system. This makes the shoe ideal for long-distance running, daily training, and recovery runs. The DNA LOFT cushioning provides a soft, protective feel, while the GuideRails® system ensures that your foot stays aligned, reducing the risk of knee or hip pain. The shoe performs well at a variety of paces, although it’s particularly well-suited for slower to moderate-paced runs where comfort and support are prioritized.

Outsole and Durability:

The outsole of the Glycerin GTS 21 is designed with durability in mind, featuring rubber in high-wear areas to provide good traction and extend the life of the shoe. The tread pattern offers reliable grip on various surfaces, including wet roads, making the shoe versatile for different running conditions. The durability of the outsole, combined with the high-quality materials used in the midsole and upper, ensures that the Glycerin GTS 21 can handle high mileage without significant wear and tear.

Weight:

For a stability shoe with such plush cushioning, the Glycerin GTS 21 is relatively lightweight. While it’s not as light as a performance-oriented shoe, it strikes a good balance between cushioning, support, and weight, making it a comfortable option for daily training without feeling overly heavy.

Style and Aesthetics:

The Glycerin GTS 21 has a sleek and modern design, with several colorway options to suit different tastes. The overall look is clean and stylish, appealing to runners who want both performance and aesthetics in their footwear.

Use Cases:

  • Overpronation: The GuideRails® support system makes the Glycerin GTS 21 ideal for runners who overpronate or need additional support to maintain proper alignment during their runs.
  • Long Runs: The plush cushioning and stability make this shoe a great choice for long-distance running, where comfort and support are crucial.
  • Daily Training: The Glycerin GTS 21 is versatile enough for daily runs, particularly for those who prefer a more cushioned experience.
  • Recovery Runs: The soft ride is perfect for recovery runs, offering protection and comfort for tired legs.

Comparison to Glycerin GTS 20:

Compared to the Glycerin GTS 20, the GTS 21 offers a slightly softer and more responsive ride, thanks to the updated DNA LOFT v2 cushioning. The fit and upper design have also been refined, providing a more secure and comfortable experience. The overall feel is more polished, making the GTS 21 a worthwhile upgrade for those who enjoyed the GTS 20.

Summary:

The Brooks Glycerin GTS 21 is an excellent choice for runners who need stability and support but don’t want to compromise on cushioning and comfort. It combines the plush ride of the Glycerin line with the effective GuideRails® system, making it a versatile and reliable option for those who overpronate or require a bit more structure in their running shoes. Whether you're logging long miles, recovering from a hard workout, or just looking for a comfortable daily trainer, the Glycerin GTS 21 offers a balanced mix of cushioning, support, and durability.

Glycerin GTS 21 vs Glycerin 20

When comparing the Brooks Glycerin GTS 21 to the Brooks Glycerin 20, there are several differences that reflect the purpose and design of each shoe. Here's a detailed comparison to help you understand how these models differ:

Cushioning and Midsole

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The Glycerin GTS 21 features DNA LOFT cushioning throughout the midsole, providing a plush and luxurious underfoot feel. The GTS version of the Glycerin is designed for runners who need stability, so it includes Brooks’ GuideRails® support system, which helps to keep the foot aligned and reduce excess movement, particularly for those who overpronate. The cushioning is soft, making it comfortable for long runs and daily training, while the GuideRails® system ensures that the shoe offers the necessary support without being intrusive.

  • Glycerin 20: The Glycerin 20, on the other hand, is a neutral running shoe with the same DNA LOFT cushioning but without the GuideRails® support system. The cushioning in the Glycerin 20 provides a similar plush experience, ideal for runners who prioritize comfort and a smooth ride. However, the absence of the GuideRails® means it’s better suited for neutral runners who don’t require additional stability.

Stability and Support

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 is the "Go-To-Support" version, meaning it includes Brooks’ GuideRails® technology. This system is designed to provide holistic support, helping to keep the knees and hips aligned by controlling excess movement. This feature makes the Glycerin GTS 21 an excellent choice for runners who overpronate or need added stability in their running shoes.

  • Glycerin 20: The Glycerin 20 does not include the GuideRails® system, making it a true neutral shoe. It’s ideal for runners who have a neutral gait and do not require additional support. The focus is purely on cushioning and comfort, offering a smooth ride without the added stability features.

Upper Design and Fit

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The upper of the Glycerin GTS 21 is made from engineered mesh, providing breathability and a secure fit. The 3D Fit Print technology enhances the structure of the upper, offering a snug and supportive feel, particularly around the midfoot. The internal bootie construction ensures a comfortable, irritation-free experience, especially over longer distances.

  • Glycerin 20: The Glycerin 20 also features an engineered mesh upper with 3D Fit Print, similar in terms of comfort and breathability. However, since it’s a neutral shoe, the fit is focused on providing a comfortable experience without the additional structure needed for stability. The Glycerin 20’s upper is designed to offer a more flexible and adaptable fit for neutral runners.

Ride and Performance

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The ride of the Glycerin GTS 21 is smooth, with the plush DNA LOFT cushioning ensuring a comfortable experience on long runs. The GuideRails® support system works to maintain stability, making the ride more controlled for those who need it. This combination of cushioning and support makes the GTS 21 particularly suitable for runners who need stability without sacrificing comfort.

  • Glycerin 20: The Glycerin 20 offers a similarly smooth and cushioned ride, but without the added stability features. The neutral design makes it more versatile for runners who prefer a soft, cushioned ride but don’t need the extra guidance. The Glycerin 20 is great for long runs, daily training, and runners who prioritize comfort and smooth transitions.

Outsole and Durability

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The outsole of the GTS 21 is designed for durability, with strategically placed rubber to provide traction and extend the shoe’s lifespan. The tread pattern offers reliable grip on various surfaces, and the durability is enhanced to accommodate the needs of stability runners.

  • Glycerin 20: The Glycerin 20’s outsole is similar in terms of durability and traction, designed to handle various surfaces and provide a smooth ride. The lack of GuideRails® means the outsole doesn’t need to accommodate additional stability features, so it’s slightly more flexible.

Weight

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 is slightly heavier due to the added GuideRails® support system, but it’s still relatively lightweight for a stability shoe. The extra weight is a trade-off for the added stability and support.

  • Glycerin 20: The Glycerin 20 is lighter than the GTS 21, making it a better option for runners who want a cushioned, neutral shoe without the additional weight of stability features.

Aesthetics and Style

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 has a sleek, modern design with a focus on both function and style. The shoe comes in several colorways that appeal to runners who want a stylish yet supportive shoe.

  • Glycerin 20: The Glycerin 20 also features a modern design, with a focus on comfort and performance. The color options are similar, offering a clean, stylish look.

Summary:

  • Choose the Glycerin GTS 21 if you need stability and support due to overpronation or if you prefer a shoe that helps guide your foot through a neutral alignment. The GuideRails® system makes it ideal for runners who need that extra bit of support without compromising on cushioning.

  • Opt for the Glycerin 20 if you have a neutral gait and prioritize cushioning and comfort without the need for stability features. The Glycerin 20 is lighter and more flexible, making it a great choice for runners who don’t require additional support.

Both shoes offer excellent cushioning and comfort, but the GTS 21 adds stability features for those who need them, while the Glycerin 20 remains a pure neutral option.

Get The Right Size!

Improper shoe sizing and shape are the primary cause of ingrown toenails, bunions, corns and hammer toes. Sounds fun, doesn't it? It's not. Shoes that don’t fit your feet correctly can also lead to muscular imbalances in the body, opening the door to foot, knee and hip injuries.

The More You Know..

Most runners get shoes too small for them because they don't take into account these factors:

    • When a load is applied to your foot by running, your foot will spread up to half an inch in length. One shoe size is only 1/3 inch.
    • If allowed, your foot will splay 15 percent in width under load.
    • Your foot is widest at the toes (but most shoes are not).

    Tips on sizing

    • Do not assume you are the same size as a previous shoe.

    • If your feet are slightly different sizes, get your shoes to fit the larger foot.
