The Brooks Cascadia 18 is a popular trail running shoe designed to offer comfort, durability, and performance for various terrains. Here's a detailed review based on its key features:
Key Features:
-
Grip and Traction:
- The Cascadia 18 features an upgraded TrailTack rubber outsole that offers excellent grip on both wet and dry surfaces. The multidirectional lugs provide improved traction, making it a solid choice for technical trails and challenging terrains.
-
Cushioning and Comfort:
- This version comes with DNA LOFT v2 cushioning, making it softer and lighter compared to previous models. The cushioning adapts to your stride, offering better shock absorption without sacrificing responsiveness.
- Despite being more cushioned, it maintains a low-to-the-ground feel, allowing better stability on uneven terrain.
-
Stability:
- The Cascadia 18 excels in providing stability, thanks to the Ballistic Rock Shield integrated into the midsole. This feature protects your feet from sharp rocks and other trail hazards while keeping the shoe flexible enough for smooth transitions.
- It also includes side guards to prevent debris from entering the shoe, a helpful feature for more rugged environments.
-
Fit and Upper:
- The upper uses engineered mesh with targeted breathability and durability, keeping your feet cool while being resistant to wear and tear.
- Drainage ports are a new addition, which help the shoe dry out quickly if you cross streams or encounter wet conditions.
-
Weight:
- At approximately 10.4 oz (for men’s size 9), it’s lightweight for a trail shoe, making it easier for runners who prefer a less bulky feel during long runs.
-
Durability:
- The outsole and upper are both highly durable, designed to withstand the tough conditions often encountered on trails. The construction materials are high-quality and built to last through long-distance trail runs or multiple seasons of wear.
Pros:
- Excellent grip and traction on various terrains.
- Responsive yet soft cushioning.
- Durable and protective design, especially in rocky areas.
- Lightweight and agile for a trail shoe.
- Improved drainage and stability.
Cons:
- Some users might find the fit a little snug, particularly in the forefoot area.
- The increased cushioning may not appeal to those who prefer a firmer or more minimalistic feel.
Ideal For:
- Trail runners who frequent technical trails and rocky surfaces.
- Long-distance runners looking for cushioning without sacrificing performance.
- Those who need a durable, all-terrain shoe for various weather conditions.
The Brooks Cascadia 18 continues to be a strong contender in the trail running shoe market, offering improvements that cater to comfort, protection, and versatility. It’s a solid choice for runners who need reliable footwear on rugged trails.

Proper Shoe Fit
Get The Right Size!
Improper shoe sizing and shape are the primary cause of ingrown toenails, bunions, corns and hammer toes. Sounds fun, doesn't it? It's not. Shoes that don’t fit your feet correctly can also lead to muscular imbalances in the body, opening the door to foot, knee and hip injuries.
The More You Know..
Most runners get shoes too small for them because they don't take into account these factors:
- When a load is applied to your foot by running, your foot will spread up to half an inch in length. One shoe size is only 1/3 inch.
- If allowed, your foot will splay 15 percent in width under load.
- Your foot is widest at the toes (but most shoes are not).
Tips on sizing
- Do not assume you are the same size as a previous shoe.
- If your feet are slightly different sizes, get your shoes to fit the larger foot.
- Use this shoe sizing chart:
