The Brooks Glycerin GTS 21 is a stability version of the popular Glycerin 21, combining the plush cushioning of the Glycerin line with the supportive GuideRails® system typically found in the Adrenaline GTS series. Here’s a detailed review:

Comfort and Cushioning:

The Glycerin GTS 21 features the same DNA LOFT cushioning as the standard Glycerin 21, offering a soft and luxurious feel underfoot. The cushioning extends throughout the midsole, providing a plush ride that is particularly well-suited for long-distance running and recovery runs. The shoe is designed to absorb impact and deliver a smooth, comfortable experience, making it ideal for runners who prioritize a cushioned and protective ride.

Stability and Support:

What sets the Glycerin GTS 21 apart from the regular Glycerin 21 is the inclusion of Brooks’ GuideRails® support system. This system is designed to keep excess movement in check, particularly for runners who overpronate (when the foot rolls inward too much during the gait cycle). The GuideRails® technology offers subtle, holistic support, focusing on keeping the runner's stride aligned and reducing stress on the knees. Unlike traditional stability shoes that use a medial post, the GuideRails® system provides support only when needed, allowing for a more natural and less intrusive running experience.

Upper Design and Fit:

The Glycerin GTS 21 features an engineered mesh upper that is both breathable and supportive. The upper adapts well to the shape of the foot, providing a snug yet comfortable fit. The internal bootie construction adds to the shoe's overall comfort, offering a seamless and irritation-free experience. The 3D Fit Print technology enhances the structure of the upper without adding unnecessary weight, ensuring that the foot is well-supported throughout the run. The toe box is roomy enough to accommodate various foot shapes, while the midfoot fit is secure, providing stability without feeling overly tight.

Ride and Performance:

The ride of the Glycerin GTS 21 is smooth and stable, combining the plush cushioning of the Glycerin line with the added support of the GuideRails® system. This makes the shoe ideal for long-distance running, daily training, and recovery runs, especially for runners who need a bit of extra stability. The DNA LOFT cushioning provides a soft and protective feel, while the GuideRails® system ensures that the foot stays aligned, reducing the risk of injury and promoting a more efficient running form. The shoe offers a balanced mix of cushioning and support, making it suitable for a wide range of running activities.

Outsole and Durability:

The outsole of the Glycerin GTS 21 is durable, with strategically placed rubber to provide good traction and extend the life of the shoe. The tread pattern offers solid grip on a variety of surfaces, including wet roads, making the shoe versatile for different running conditions. The Segmented Crash Pad ensures smooth transitions from heel to toe, contributing to the shoe's overall comfort and performance. The durability of the outsole, combined with the high-quality materials used in the midsole and upper, makes the Glycerin GTS 21 a reliable option for high-mileage runners.

Weight:

For a stability shoe with such plush cushioning, the Glycerin GTS 21 is relatively lightweight. While it’s not as light as some performance-oriented models, it strikes a good balance between cushioning, support, and weight, making it a comfortable option for daily training without feeling too heavy.

Aesthetics and Style:

The Glycerin GTS 21 has a sleek and modern design, with several colorway options to suit different tastes. The overall look is clean and stylish, appealing to runners who want both performance and aesthetics in their footwear.

Use Cases:

  • Overpronation: The GuideRails® system makes the Glycerin GTS 21 ideal for runners who overpronate or need additional support to maintain proper alignment during their runs.
  • Long Runs: The plush cushioning and stability make this shoe a great choice for long-distance running, where comfort and support are crucial.
  • Daily Training: The Glycerin GTS 21 is versatile enough for daily runs, particularly for those who prefer a more cushioned experience.
  • Recovery Runs: The soft ride is perfect for recovery runs, offering protection and comfort for tired legs.

Summary:

The Brooks Glycerin GTS 21 is an excellent choice for runners who need stability and support but don't want to compromise on cushioning and comfort. It combines the plush ride of the Glycerin line with the effective GuideRails® system, making it a versatile and reliable option for those who overpronate or require a bit more structure in their running shoes. Whether you're logging long miles, recovering from a hard workout, or just looking for a comfortable daily trainer, the Glycerin GTS 21 offers a balanced mix of cushioning, support, and durability.

Glycerin Gts 21 vs Glycerin Gts 20

When comparing the Brooks Glycerin GTS 21 to the Glycerin GTS 20, there are a few key updates and differences that reflect Brooks' efforts to enhance comfort, support, and overall performance. Here’s a detailed comparison between the two models:

Cushioning and Midsole

  • Glycerin GTS 20: The Glycerin GTS 20 featured DNA LOFT cushioning throughout the midsole, providing a plush and comfortable ride. The cushioning in the GTS 20 was soft and designed to absorb impact well, making it a great choice for long-distance runners who needed both cushioning and support. It delivered a smooth ride, although it leaned slightly more towards comfort than responsiveness.

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 continues with DNA LOFT cushioning but uses an updated version, known as DNA LOFT v2. This iteration is slightly lighter and more responsive while maintaining the soft, luxurious feel that the Glycerin line is known for. The GTS 21 offers a smoother, more cushioned experience with improved shock absorption and a softer overall ride compared to the GTS 20. This update makes the GTS 21 feel a bit more agile while still providing excellent cushioning for long runs.

Stability and Support

  • Glycerin GTS 20: The GTS 20 incorporated Brooks’ GuideRails® support system, which provided holistic support to keep the runner’s stride aligned. The GuideRails® system in the GTS 20 was effective at managing excess movement and was especially beneficial for runners who overpronate. The support was noticeable but not intrusive, allowing for a stable and controlled running experience.

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GuideRails® system remains in the GTS 21, offering the same level of stability and support as in the GTS 20. However, the system in the GTS 21 has been slightly refined to work more seamlessly with the updated midsole and upper. The support feels more integrated, offering a smoother and more natural running experience while still providing the necessary stability for overpronators. This refinement makes the GTS 21 feel less bulky while maintaining the same level of support.

Upper Design and Fit

  • Glycerin GTS 20: The upper of the GTS 20 was made of an engineered mesh that provided a secure and comfortable fit. It was breathable and adaptable, with enough structure to keep the foot well-supported. The 3D Fit Print technology in the upper helped to offer a snug fit, but some runners found the fit to be slightly too tight in certain areas, particularly in the midfoot.

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 features an updated engineered mesh upper that enhances breathability and support. The fit in the GTS 21 is slightly more refined, offering a better balance between snugness and comfort. The upper in the GTS 21 is more adaptive, accommodating a wider range of foot shapes and providing a more personalized fit. The internal bootie construction and 3D Fit Print technology remain, but with tweaks that make the upper feel more comfortable and secure, especially over longer distances.

Ride and Performance

  • Glycerin GTS 20: The ride of the GTS 20 was smooth and cushioned, making it ideal for long runs and daily training. The shoe offered consistent performance, with enough cushioning to protect the joints and reduce fatigue. However, the ride leaned more towards a plush, comfortable feel, which some runners found to be a bit too soft for faster-paced runs.

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 offers a slightly more refined ride, with the DNA LOFT v2 cushioning providing a softer and more responsive experience. The shoe remains smooth and stable, but the updated cushioning makes the GTS 21 feel a bit more versatile, capable of handling a broader range of paces. The improved cushioning and fit make the GTS 21 more comfortable for longer runs and recovery days, while still offering enough responsiveness for moderate-paced runs.

Outsole and Durability

  • Glycerin GTS 20: The outsole of the GTS 20 was durable, with rubber placed strategically to enhance traction and extend the shoe’s lifespan. The tread pattern offered good grip on various surfaces, making the GTS 20 reliable for road running and light trails. The durability of the GTS 20 was generally excellent, holding up well over many miles.

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The outsole in the GTS 21 is similar to the GTS 20 but with slight improvements in rubber placement and tread design. These updates provide better grip and enhance the overall flexibility of the shoe. The durability remains strong, with the GTS 21 capable of handling high mileage without significant wear. The refined outsole contributes to a smoother ride, especially during transitions from heel to toe.

Weight

  • Glycerin GTS 20: The GTS 20 was relatively lightweight for a stability shoe with such plush cushioning, making it versatile for various types of runs.

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 is slightly lighter than the GTS 20, thanks to the updated DNA LOFT v2 cushioning and refined upper. This reduction in weight enhances the shoe’s overall responsiveness and makes it feel more agile, particularly on longer runs.

Aesthetics and Style

  • Glycerin GTS 20: The GTS 20 had a sleek and modern design with a range of color options. The aesthetic was clean and appealing, with a focus on function.

  • Glycerin GTS 21: The GTS 21 continues with a similar aesthetic but offers a more streamlined and polished look. The colorways are vibrant and contemporary, giving the shoe a fresh appearance that reflects its refined performance.

Summary:

The Brooks Glycerin GTS 21 builds on the strengths of the GTS 20 with several key updates that enhance comfort, fit, and overall ride quality.

  • Choose the GTS 20 if you’re satisfied with a plush, supportive shoe and prefer the feel of a slightly firmer ride.
  • Opt for the GTS 21 if you’re looking for a softer, more responsive ride with improved fit and a slightly lighter feel.

Both models offer excellent cushioning and support, but the GTS 21 provides a more refined and comfortable running experience, making it a worthwhile upgrade for many runners.

Get The Right Size!

Improper shoe sizing and shape are the primary cause of ingrown toenails, bunions, corns and hammer toes. Sounds fun, doesn't it? It's not. Shoes that don’t fit your feet correctly can also lead to muscular imbalances in the body, opening the door to foot, knee and hip injuries.

The More You Know..

Most runners get shoes too small for them because they don't take into account these factors:

    • When a load is applied to your foot by running, your foot will spread up to half an inch in length. One shoe size is only 1/3 inch.
    • If allowed, your foot will splay 15 percent in width under load.
    • Your foot is widest at the toes (but most shoes are not).

    Tips on sizing

    • Do not assume you are the same size as a previous shoe.

    • If your feet are slightly different sizes, get your shoes to fit the larger foot.
